We are retired farmers who say that organic is mostly an advertising term, but we believe in growing things in as natural a way as is practical, without use of toxic chemicals. We are ‘urban gardeners’, with a commercial-size garden in town, plus some rural lands.
Practices (our standards for raising or making our products)
We have been experimenting for many years, combing the seed catalogues to find vegetable varieties that yield best quality, most flavourful produce, given our northern clay and climate.
We start all our own bedding plants from these selected seeds, and plant continuously through the season so that we have an ongoing supply of fresh new stuff.
We use mulches and cover crops as much as possible, and do not worry too much about weeds as we find healthy plants can compete handily. Healthy plants can usually also handle insect pressures, although we do occasionally use some diatomaceous earth (a natural, inorganic abrasive) or a very dilute solution of ordinary dishwashing soap to control insects.
We find that crops, especially root crops, grown on our compost-enriched clay soil are much more flavourful than those grown on sand or muck soils.
